Radon Mitigation Systems in Central Massachusetts

Radon mitigation pipe running up the side of a house

If your home tests high, the most common fix is active soil depressurization: a contractor drills through the basement floor, connects a sealed pipe, and installs a fan that pulls radon from under the slab and vents it above the roofline, away from windows.

What installation looks like

  • A diagnostic check of the basement floor and foundation
  • One or more suction points through the slab, sealed around the pipe
  • Pipe routed outside or through the house, with a fan outside the living space
  • Sealing of major cracks and openings
  • A gauge on the pipe so you can see the system is working
  • A retest afterward to confirm the levels came down

Choosing a professional

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health publishes a list of nationally certified radon mitigation professionals. Ask whether your installer is certified, whether retesting is included, and what warranty covers the fan.

Running costs

The fan runs all the time, so expect a small ongoing electricity cost. The cost guide has typical numbers.
